Craig Schlanger, Esq. returned to the Hiscock Legal Society in Syracuse, New York, in January 2017, after a 31-year hiatus, as a senior attorney in the agency's appeals program. In July 2017, he was appointed supervising attorney of the parole program. He previously spent close to two years as an assistant public defender for Cortland County, managing the endless parade of cases that come through Cortland City Court. Before joining the Cortland County Public Defender's Office, Craig spent four years at Mental Hygiene Legal Service in Utica, representing convicted sex offenders in civil commitment proceeding under the Sex Offender Management and Treatment Act. Before joining MHLS, he was a criminal defense lawyer in Syracuse for 33 years, representing the accused in state courts throughout Central and Northern New York, the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York, the Appellate Division, Fourth Department, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. A 1977 graduate of Syracuse University College of Law, Craig is a past president of the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and a member of the New York State Defenders Association. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Onondaga County Assigned Counsel Program, the Criminal Justice Act Committee for the Northern District of New York, the New York State Bar Association Committee to Ensure the Quality of Mandated Representation, and the Legal Policy and Action Committee of the New York Civil Liberties Union’s Central New York chapter.
