Navigating the Course for the Release of Pre-Trial and Post-Conviction Prisoners
Threatened by Covid-19 in State and Federal Jails

Thursday, April 9, 2020

Live Program Via Zoom

Registration is free, but required using the link above.

Given the dangers of COVID-19, New York has adopted policies eliminating or reducing close contact between people as much as possible. These measures have thus far not dealt with the risks of COVID-19 outbreaks in state and federal correctional facilities. This free webinar is designed to provide the state and federal court practitioner with the tools needed to advocate for the release of their clients from the densely populated environment of correctional facilities, where social distancing is not possible, on-site medical facilities and quarantine measures are inadequate, and sanitizing products are not readily available. It is in these prisons where  COVID-19 is especially dangerous to individuals who are elderly, have compromised immune systems, or underlying health conditions.

This CLE is free to all members and non-members. 3 CLE skills credits will be provided. This seminar will be recorded and made available for those that cannot watch it live.

The speakers will include:

Donna Aldea, Esq., Barket, Epstein, Kearon, Aldea & LoTurco, LLP

Deirdre VonDornum, Esq. Attorney-in-Charge, Federal Defenders of New York, EDNY

Lauren Gottesman, Staff Attorney, Criminal Defense Practice, The Legal Aid Society

  • 1:00 pm to 2:15 pm: How to advocate for the release of  pre-trial and post-conviction prisoners threatened by Covid-19 in Federal Jails. Topics will include navigating the process of having applications brought before the court, making arguments for compassionate release and medical furloughs.
  • 2:30 pm to 3:45 pm: How to advocate for the release of prisoners threatened by Covid-19 in State prisons. This lecture will be divided into two sections: pre-trial detainees and post-conviction inmates. Strategies will be discussed for making the best argument possible to get your client released from prison.

Registration is free, but required using the link above.
