The New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NYSACDL) congratulates Governor Cuomo in taking Executive Action to move adolescents out of adult prisons and place them into age-appropriate facilities when there are no alternatives to incarceration. As the attorneys for these young people, we are well aware of their need for educational, vocational and social services in prison to help them lead productive lives when they are released. We applaud the Governor, the Assembly and Senate for setting the tone for proper treatment of adolescents when they are in the care of the New York prison system. NYSACDL also supports the appointment of the Attorney General as the special prosecutor to handle certain cases where there is a police-related death. We believe the independence of the Attorney General will add a greater sense of fairness and accountability in the event there is a future unfortunate incident and will reduce the further disenfranchisement of communities of color. The Governor has taken steps to improve the effectiveness and fairness of the criminal justice system and we support these efforts. NYSACDL stands ready to help implement these measures.
